About The Area

Starting from the relative flat landscape of the Vale of Mowbray the line wends its way up to the lower reaches of Wensleydale, passing through the dales market towns of Bedale and Leyburn on its way to the terminus at Redmire.

Look for the rare example of a fortified church tower at St Gregory’s in Bedale, dating back to the early 11th Century, then watch as the scenery slowly changes as the line begins its 11 mile climb to Leyburn.

Pass under the Shawl at Leyburn, so named because Mary Queen of Scots reputedly lost her shawl here whilst escaping from Bolton Castle in 1568, then the line takes one last climb up to Preston under Scar, where it drops away revealing spectacular scenery of the whole of Wensleydale in front of you, with Bolton Castle nestling in the hills.
